MövenPick is an international premium hotel chain, headquartered in Switzerland, which primarily focuses on four-five star resort and business/airport hotel markets. MövenPick operates 59 hotels in 23 countries with a capacity of 14,244 rooms. It has more than 12,000 employees.
In 1998, an approximately 30 percent interest in MövenPick was acquired, and in 2003 the stake was raised to 33.3 percent (25.5 percent direct holding and 7.8 percent through KHI). KHC believed that the MövenPick brand was underutilized and that its high quality, gastronomy business could be leveraged to position MövenPick as a four- and five-star brand.
KHC’s minority investment in MövenPick represents a significant negative control position, which allows the Company direct participation in decisions regarding MövenPick's strategy. In addition, Prince Alwaleed has used his network of contacts to facilitate the expansion of the MövenPick brand into the emerging Middle Eastern, African and South East Asian markets. Management believes this has helped to extend the brand while significantly increasing MövenPick's hotel management revenues.
MövenPick intends to double its hotels under management within the next five years, with a primary focus on Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. It is expected that KHI will continue to use the MövenPick brand (currently seven out of the 18 existing hotels owned by KHI are managed by MövenPick), particularly in the Middle East and Africa. It believes that KHI’s continued geographic expansion and growth will continue to contribute to MövenPick's earnings growth.
