Kingdom Holding Company acquired the Savoy Hotel in 2005 in partnership with Halifax Bank of Scotland. KHC believed the Savoy, with its iconic status and worldwide reputation, presented an ideal opportunity to replicate the refurbishment and repositioning strategy so successfully employed at the George V Hotel in Paris. KHC maintains a majority interest in the hotel, now under Fairmont Hotels and Resorts management.
Located on London’s Strand in the City of Westminster, the Savoy Hotel, London, is one of the world’s most prestigious hotels. Opened in 1889 by theatrical impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte with profits from his Gilbert & Sullivan operas, the Savoy has been favored by the wealthy and influential for over a century – even serving as a London home for the likes of Claude Monet, Noël Coward and Frank Sinatra.
Following acquisition by KHC and Halifax Bank of Scotland, the Savoy closed in late 2007 for renovations costing USD 800m. It reopened to wide acclaim in 2010 with HRH Prince Charles presiding, and under Fairmont management remains one of London’s most opulent and exclusive addresses. Its 268 rooms afford grand views of the City and the River Thames.
